He had only £5 and a toolbox, borrowed from his brother John, to
his name when he set up the business in Blairgowrie’s Castle Street. Choosing the name “D & J Scott” was an easy choice for Mr Scott as he was always grateful to his brother for gifting him his toolbox and to show this appreciation he included John’s initial in the business name d espite the
latter’s non-involvement in the running of the firm.
As was customary during those times, the role of joiner and undertaker were combined and so it was with D & J Scott. A small
workforce of dedicated men steadily grew as the business expanded throughout the decades. When David Scott Snr., retired in the 1960s, he was succeeded by his son, also David Scott, who had taken an active role since the Second World War.
A building sector was introduced in the 1970s, leading to the employment of nearly eighty men. The expansion meant the requirement of larger premises and these were found nearby at
Athole Street, although the funerals continued to be arranged and conducted from the original site at Castle Street.
By the early 1990s, David Scott wished to become semi-retired and sold the building and joinery section of the firm to concentrate on arranging funerals, having now been joined by his son-in-law, Billy Mackay in 1993. The business amended its name to reflect this new direction and became as it remains today, “David Scott (Blairgowrie) Ltd, Funeral Directors”.
New premises in Blairgowrie were found at the current site of 65 High Street in 1996 with the addition of David’s daughter Margot to the staff at the same time. Premises were also opened in Alyth in 2001.
David Scott passed away in 2004 having maintained an active role in proceedings until that time. Since then the business has been run by Billy and Margot, who were joined by a fourth generation of the family in 2008, their son Martin who qualified with the Certificate in Funeral Practice (Cert. FP) in 2012. Martin was awarded with his Diploma in Funeral Directing in 2024, the first in Scotland to be awarded this through the IFD College.
As of 2024, the team of Funeral Directors at the business have all qualified with their Certificate in Funeral Practice.
